Criminal Justice Reform

Home > Issues

As a Democratic candidate for the Senate representing Florida, I am dedicated to enacting comprehensive criminal justice reform that addresses systemic inequalities and promotes fairness and rehabilitation over punishment. My approach begins with advocating for the end of mandatory minimum sentencing laws that disproportionately affect minorities and non-violent offenders. I will support legislation that prioritizes treatment and rehabilitation programs over incarceration for drug-related offenses, recognizing addiction as a public health issue rather than a criminal one. Additionally, I will work to eliminate private prisons, which profit from high incarceration rates and often provide substandard conditions and care.

Furthermore, I will champion policies that aim to reduce recidivism and support reintegration into society for formerly incarcerated individuals. This includes promoting access to education, job training, and employment opportunities, as well as restoring voting rights to those who have served their sentences. I will also advocate for increased funding for public defenders and reforms to the bail system, ensuring that no one is unjustly detained due to an inability to pay. By addressing these critical areas, we can create a more just and equitable criminal justice system that upholds the principles of fairness and rehabilitation, ultimately contributing to safer and more thriving communities.
